Denim: The Fabric That Built America

$50.00

-

In the 1930s, the US government hired photographers to document blue-collar America amid sweeping agricultural reforms, resulting in a bank of 170,000 images. Denim: The Fabric That Built America, 1935–1944 traces the origins of denim’s shift from pure workwear to cultural icon through a compendium of photos drawn primarily from this Farm Security Administration archive. Authors Graham Marsh and Tony Nourmand combed through this vast collection and found one unmistakable thread: workers across every industry and region were dressed head to toe in Levi’s, Wrangler, and Carhartt. In black and white and color, these photographs capture ordinary Americans — of every race, young and old — relentlessly at work, hands and boots caked in denim dirt, pushing the country out of the Great Depression and into postwar prosperity. The 250 selected images have all been rescanned from the original negatives, so details like the heft of the weave, white stitching against indigo, and cuffed hems appear startlingly modern. Huck + 4

Critics have called it essential reading for anyone who loves denim history. The Guardian praised the photographs for capturing “ordinary Americans of every race, young and old, relentlessly toiling… to push the US out of the Great Depression into the prosperity of its postwar years.” The Eye of Photography called the book “a tall, cool glass of water” for anyone wanting deeper knowledge of denim beyond a retailer’s generic product description. And Huck noted the book’s “kaleidoscopic vision of fashion history,” pointing out how the authors also tie denim’s visibility to the story of women’s liberation. Perfect for collectors of vintage Americana, denim heads, fashion historians, and anyone who owns a pair of jeans (which, statistically, is most of the planet), this hardcover coffee-table book from Reel Art Press belongs on the shelf of anyone who wants to understand how workwear became the most enduring fabric in American fashion.
