Why Most Radio Strap Builders Only Customize the Rear

The rear is one flat panel with nothing on it. It can be stamped almost as an afterthought. The front and the basket wrap around hardware and stitch lines, so anything added there has to be laid out and stamped before the strap is assembled. That’s handwork on a piece that isn’t finished yet, and it’s the reason it usually gets left off a web form. We build entirely to order.

How Long Does a Custom Radio Strap Take to Make?

Six to eighteen weeks, made one at a time by hand. In-stock straps ship in two to three days. The range is real, lead times move with volume, and we’d rather show you the current number than quote you the best case.

What Makes Axe & Awl’s Fire Service Gear Different?

We started making this gear because Spencer was carrying it. He spent his career in the fire service, Courtney worked as a full-time paramedic, and the first radio straps came out of coworkers at the station asking for them. That was 2015, on a kitchen island, with one sewing machine.

We’re about twelve people now, cutting and stitching at our warehouse outside downtown Waynesville, a town that once had one of the largest tanneries in the country. We’re also a distributor for Phenix TL-2 leather fire helmets, which means helmet questions get answered by someone who has fitted them, not by a catalog description.

What that adds up to on a form is knowing which questions matter. Where a strap fails, what a stamp looks like after ten years of turnout coat abrasion, which hardware survives a shift.
