Walker Evans: American Photographs

American Photographs is Walker Evans’s landmark 1938 photobook, first published by the Museum of Modern Art to accompany his groundbreaking solo exhibition. It gathers 87 images of American life between 1929 and 1937 — storefronts, houses, factories, and faces — captured with the plain, unadorned style that came to define his work.

Long considered one of the most influential photobooks of the 20th century, it helped establish documentary photography as a serious art form and shaped generations of photographers and writers who followed. The book includes Lincoln Kirstein’s original critical essay, and later anniversary editions add historical context from MoMA curator Sarah Hermanson Meister.
