How to Care for Your Leather Goods: The Ultimate Guide with Our Leather Care Products

When it comes to caring for your leather goods things can sometimes get a bit confusing. What type of products should you be utilizing? A cleaner, warm water and a soft cloth or a conditioner and a soft brush? What type of leather is your good made out of and how has it been tanned? Vegetable tanned or chrome tanned? How often should you be using a leather conditioner or leather cleaner?

Lets first begin by understanding why leather care is an important step in owning long-lasting leather goods.

Why Leather Care Matters for Longevity

Leather care is a key step in making sure your leather goods last a lifetime. Using a conditioner or cleaner is an easy way to ensure a long life for your bag, belt, wallet or boots. In doing so you protect and nourish your heirloom items.

Know Which Type of Leather Your Good is Made From

Determining which type of leather your product is crafted from is step #1. You can typically find this information in the products listing or by calling the company you’ve ordered from.

Here at Axe & Awl we typically use vegetable tanned, bridle leathers for our belts, bag straps & small goods . These items benefit from both a cleaner and conditioner as they get the most wear and exposure to the elements.

Our bags however, can also be made using a leather that is chrome or oil tanned. This type of tanning results in a softer, more water resistant leather creating less of a need for conditioning.

Check out the chart below for a more comprehensive look into how to care for your leather goods!
